Stage lighting is an art. It is used to light up the scene, to influence the performance, to guide the audience and to create atmosphere. On any stage, lighting is essential. It allows the audience to see the actors on stage, focuses their attention where they are, lights up the whole scene, drives the plot, provides setting and location, and even hides some of the action from the audience, such as the constant change of scenery. This is an example of what happens when you arrive at the theatre. On the audience's first arrival, the house lights are lit so that everyone can find their place. The lights are dimmed to indicate that the performance is about to begin. A spotlight is lit for the speaker who tells the plot of the play. Next, the main character walks out of the house, followed by a moveable spotlight, through the dark forest at night. These are the

An experienced lighting designer can turn a simple event into an exciting experience. Stage lighting can be used in a variety of applications including conferences, concerts, sales showroom, churches and more.

If you're a project planner, you'll want to make your speakers and actors look good. After all, it makes you look great too! But, to make them look good, you need the right stage light. The right  lighting draws the attention of the audience, creates the mood, 'moulds' the speaker and the actor and makes them stand out. But before you can call out, say, "Let there be light!" To fill the entire stage with lights, you need to be familiar with the different stage lighting fixtures and the placement of the lamps.

In this article, we'll cover some of the basics of stage lighting that will help you understand it better.

Five functions of stage lighting

The five main roles of stage lighting are: visibility, motivation, composition, mood, and highlights.

Visibility

Stage lighting illuminates the stage and the objects on it; stage lighting also provides sight and direction to the audience.

Motivation

At most events, lighting designers try to make the lighting look appropriate to the surroundings, and adjust the stage lighting to the scene.

Composition

For example, for performances and concerts, the lighting director will work closely with the live designer to ensure that the audience can clearly see the background of the stage and the important props or characters.

Mood

Whether slow and gentle, or bright and cheerful in colour, it can change the mood. The lighting on stage can produce different emotions and effects.

Highlights

Not only can shadows be created on stage, but they can also be accentuated in specific places. It is also possible to move light sources around the stage or to use other techniques such as strobe lighting to move shadows.

Types of Stage Lighting Fixtures

In the design of the stage lighting and the main body of the stage, various types of lighting are considered. There are six types of lighting commonly used in stage lighting design. Each type has its own unique purpose, so most lighting setups will contain different types of lights. The fixtures described may contain.

1. ERS Light

An ERS (ellipsoidal reflector spotlight) is a traditional stage spotlight which is an oval reflector spotlight. The set includes a projector and a reflector which produces a strong, clear beam of light, which is best used as a front light. You can adjust your focus with soft or sharp edges and use louvres to adjust the shape of the light to avoid the light going where you don’t want it to go. The oval points can be fixed in the right place and can be composed and focused in different ways, so you can decide very well where and how they are positioned. The tail light is also an elliptical spot lighting that can be manually controlled to follow the characters on stage.

2. LED Floodlight

Use of flood light is a very effective lighting way that the operator can tilt horizontally or vertically. In an asymmetrical floodlight the light travels faster in one direction than in the other directions on the transverse axis. Like PAR troughs, floodlights cannot support gobos, beam adjustment or other additions other than colour gels and diffusion. Compared with spotlight, stage flood lights have a wide beam angle and can illuminate a broad range of place. You can choose the white color, RGB, and RGBW color and control the light to different effects. DMX flood light can come in many different shapes and in different colours. They can provide you with very good lighting if you need to light up a large area of space. Suntech is a professional LED DMX flood light manufacturer in China, and they will help you to complete the whole stage lighting system.

3. PAR lights

PAR is a stage lighting product that produces a lot of light and can be spread widely. They cannot be adjusted like an ellipse and do not have a frame. PAR enables this function to be achieved with a wide target coverage. These luminaires are similar to car lights but are simple in construction. They do not give you exact focus or magnification, but you can adjust them to landscape or portrait orientation. Most professional and theatre luminaires are fitted with PAR and oval.

4. Fresnels

These lamps were invented by Augustine Finnel. Originally designed for use in lighthouses, they were later used as large led stage spotlights for film premieres and other events. These bulbs are unique in that they have lenses made of concentric rings. The central light is the brightest and the closer you get to the edges the softer the light becomes. Although this type of light fixture allows for a narrower light, it also allows for a softer light. You cannot decorate these lamps with blinds or styles.

5. Followspots

A follow spot is a spotlight, maybe like a enlite spotlights, place only the light in the centre.so it gives off a very strong spotlight, allowing the actors to focus better on the stage. As it is traditionally operated by hand, this light is particularly useful when you don't know which route the players will take and when you need an immediate reaction. As well as adjusting the position of the light, the operator can also adjust the size and brightness of the light and it is easy to adjust the internal panel. The light operator or soft ware can track the movements of people during a speech or performance by moving the tracking light.

6. LED Wall Washer Light

These LED wall washers use the same principle as regular LED bulbs but are more linear or tubular in construction rather than just illumination. Also called stage light bar,and the color changing led wall washer can make the surface object colorful and dynamic. DMX RGB LED wall washer light bar a great device to achieve good upward coverage and clean the whole wall with the same color.

Stage lighting Position

One of the important stage lighting concepts is the positioning of the lights. When designing, lighting designers should pay attention to the main arrangements of stage lighting:

stage light

Front lights:

During a show, the headlights are the main light. The role of lighting is to illuminate performers, sets and props. This ensures that the audience can see everything when they need it.

On many occasions, you will use the stage front lighting to purify the entire stage. Fixtures that are aimed at the actor's face are a critical step, but they themselves also make the actor look flat. Technically, there are many options for the front lights. Each light serves a different purpose, although they often work together to ensure that everything you want is illuminated correctly.

Back lighting:

There is a backlight behind actors, sets and props that adds light from a completely different angle. Not only will this avoid the subject casting shadows on the stage behind them, but it will also create a visual isolation that ensures that nothing blends in with the background.

To give the actor a more dimensional effect where they appear in the background, you'll also have a backlight and a downlight. Behind the stage, there is a backlight behind the actors. You can place the backlight vertically in various positions. PAR lamps are particularly suitable for back lighting. You can change the color and brightness to customize your look.

Just like a fill light, a piece of work can have multiple backlights, or it can be a cleaning device. Because actors and props generally don't stay on stage, multiple actors can increase your flexibility.

Downlight:

Another way to increase the size of stage lighting is downlight. The intensity of the lamps can be different. Some designers will use the term "downlight" to refer to lights on the heel, others will use the term to refer to lights that are above the stage or at a vertical angle.

Side Lights:

You'll also want to place lights on the sides of the stage, which will illuminate the actors from both sides. High-edge lighting refers to the side that is positioned high to illuminate the actor's head and shoulders. Lighting is the key to an actor's facial expression.
